Job Vacancy – Materials/Process Engineer

Our many R&D projects require a dedicated engineer to oversee activities.

Would suit a Process Engineer or Materials Scientist, ideally at MSc level and with a keen interest in sustainability. Based here in Blackburn, Lancashire and helping us to apply our DEECOM® recycling technology to plastics, polymers and composites.

Role: Longworth have patented the DEECOM® process which enables the low carbon reduction, separation and reclamation of plastics and composite waste materials using high temperature, pressured steam. Environmentalists at heart and innovators by nature; Longworth require an in-house chemical engineer to oversee progress on a number of ongoing R&D projects and innovations and to enrich our relationships with partners in the academic, RTO and private sectors. Current industry projects are with carbon fibre, fibre glass, packaging, nappies, textiles, carpet and NHS single use plastics; for industries ranging from aerospace, automotive, energy, marine, fashion, medical, and pharmaceutical.

This varied and exciting role offers a real mix of chemistry and engineering; you’ll need strong knowledge of chemical formulae and behaviour, along with lab equipment and analysis methods along with affinity for machinery, tools and ‘making things work’.

Additionally, the engineer will support Longworth by researching and presenting various manufacturing methods and feedstocks, understanding and improving LCA and constantly striving to achieve net zero; all while growing our R&D capability, team and opportunities.

Aspiring PhD will be considered for funding. Industrial experience preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To run daily process trials with various feedstock, fully reporting on before/during/after
  • To implement a robust R&D reporting and recording process for the business
  • To upkeep DEECOM® units, from lab scale through to pilot prototypes and full size
  • To identify opportunities for the technology as they arise, including potential markets for output materials
  • To deliver to ISO14001 standards
  • To write papers and assist Directors in presenting Longworth technology & findings
  • To conduct and improve on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) comparison data
  • To analyse, report and understand the behaviour of different materials during and after DEECOM®
  • To input proactive suggestions for continuous improvement and strive to achieve desired results for each project, partner or customer
  • To advise any related improvements and adjustments needed within the component cleaning team

Experience:

  • Educated to MSc in a relevant chemical, materials, or sustainability engineering degree (or equivalent)
  • A keen interest in Sustainable Manufacturing and LCA
  • Analytical thinker with a practical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to be flexible and work in different environments
  • Confident communicator, able to effectively communicate with people at all levels
  • Ability to analyse and interpret results and input proactively
